What Is The Difference Between Manual Cars And Automatic Cars?
Driving a manual car is not something that everyone can learn, especially if the city is busy and you need to change gears and rely on clutch control a lot. You might have had driving lessons in a manual car but found the gears too complicated. A disability that prevents drivers from changing gears easily is another reason why they may choose to learn to drive in an automatic. These are just a few of the many reasons why you may find learning how to drive and passing your driving test much easier in an automatic.
An automatic transmission car changes the gears automatically for you as your speed increases or decreases. If you drive a car with a manual transmission, then you will need to change the gears as you speed up and slow down.
A manual car will have 3 pedals the brake, accelerator and clutch. You also have a gear stick which is used to change gears. The clutch is operated with the left foot and the other two pedals with your right foot. Simply press the clutch down to change gear. To select the correct gear for your speed, when the clutch is down simply move the gear stick for the right gear. The majority of manual cars will have a clutch pedal, however, some cars can replace the pedal with a trigger or a button on the gearstick.
An automatic car does without a clutch because the gears are changed automatically. The car will automatically change gears as the speed increases and when the car slows down, it will automatically shift to a lower gear. The co-ordination between the clutch, accelerator and gear lever is not required when driving an automatic car. This makes it much easier to learn how to drive an automatic car over a manual. Instead of a clutch, an automatic car has a footrest. Automatic cars do not have a clutch so they are very difficult to stall. You will also not accidentally place the car in an incorrect gear, or grind the gears.
Manuals have a different gear stick than Automatics. Manual cars have five, possibly 6, forward gears and one reverse gear. The main operations of the automatic gear stick include four major operations. Although there may be variations, they are (P) park, (D) drive, (N) neutral, and (R) reverse. These operations are easy to understand, except for neutral, which is used when you’re stopped at traffic lights, or in heavy traffic.
A second difference is that a manual car cannot move on the flat unless you use the accelerator. However, an automatic can be put into drive or reverse and it will glide along by itself. Although it won’t move very fast until your press the accelerator, it will still be moving. This is something to keep in mind if you want to switch from a manual to an automatic car.

Which Are More Popular: Automatic or Manual Cars?
Manual cars are more popular than automatics in the UK, but the number of new automatics being built is increasing. Automatic cars tend to be more expensive to purchase, run and maintain. They consume more fuel than a manual car, and are also more costly to repair or insure.

What Are The Benefits Of Learning To Drive An Automatic?
The process of learning how to drive an automatic car isn’t always easier, it all depends upon what difficulties you are experiencing. You won’t notice a difference if you struggling with a common problem such as observation.
If you are having difficulty with clutch control or gear changes, learning to drive an automatic will be a lot easier. Driving in urban areas with lots congestion it is easier. You will need to constantly change your gear because of the stop-start nature involved in driving in densely populated areas. This can be an issue for experienced drivers as well as those who are learning to drive a manual vehicle.
Taking your driving test in an automatic car is easier than driving in a manual car as you do not have the risk of stalling the car and any struggles you have with clutch control. Because there are no gears so you do not need a clutch in an automatic car, it is much easier to perform manoeuvres like a turn in traffic or a hill start.
You might have difficulty managing the gears of a manual car. If this is the case, it might be easier to learn to drive in an automatic car.
Are There Any Downsides To Driving An Automatic Car?
As stated above, automatic cars tend be more expensive than manual cars to purchase, run and maintain. Automatic driving lessons can also be more costly than manual lessons because of this.
You should also remember that learning to drive and passing your test in an automatic does not allow you to drive a manual vehicle. Your licence will allow both if you pass your manual driving test.
Passing your driving test in an automatic vehicle may restrict your choices when it comes to renting or buying a car or van in the future. Also, if later you decide you would prefer to drive manual cars, then you’ll need to take another driving test.
In general, automatic cars have lower pass rates than manual cars. Don’t let this discourage you though, as thousands of learners pass the driving test in automatic vehicles every year.

Automatic Driving Lesson Frequently Asked Questions
Is automatic a full licence?
You are only allowed to drive automatic cars, and not manuals. However, if you hold a manual licence, then you can also drive automatics. Therefore, the latter is a full licence.
Are automatic cars more expensive to insure?
Because automatic cars are usually more expensive to buy, the car insurance premiums tend to be higher. This is to cover the cost of any damage, or the cost of a replacement vehicle. For example, an automatic gearbox is more complex than a manual one and so would usually cost more to replace.
Do I need to use handbrake on automatic car?
Always apply the parking brake when you are stationary in an automatic car. In P or N, the car will not drive, but the parking brake will keep it still. However, if in any other gear, the car will drive off under power if you touch the accelerator pedal, purposefully or by accident unless you have the brakes on.
Can you shift from drive to neutral without breaking?
Though it will not harm your transmission to shift into Neutral while your vehicle is in motion, the additional wear on your brakes by leaving the transmission in Drive will be negligible over the life of the brake pads. I
