What’s The Difference Between Manual And Automatic Cars?
If you live in a busy city where shifting gears and clutch control is an essential part of daily driving, learning to drive a manual car may not be for you. Perhaps you’ve had driving lessons in a manual vehicle before but found it difficult to handle the gears. Drivers may choose to drive an automatic because they can’t change gears easily due to a disability. If this is you then don’t worry as you are not the only one. Many people find it easier to learn how to drive and pass their driving test in an automatic .
An automatic transmission car changes the gears automatically for you as your speed increases or decreases. You must change the gears yourself if your car is manual transmission.
There are three pedals in manual cars, the clutch, brake, and the accelerator. You also have a gear stick which is used to change gears. You operate the clutch with your left foot, and the other two with your right foot. To change gears, you press the clutch down. When the clutch is down, you can then move the gearstick to select the required gear. You will find a clutch pedal on most manual cars, but some cars, replace the pedal with a trigger/button on the gear stick.
Because an automatics car’s gears are changed automatically, it doesn’t have a clutch. An automatic car will change the gears automatically as it speeds and slows down. The co-ordination between the clutch, accelerator and gear lever is not required when driving an automatic car. This makes it easier to learn how to drive an automatic car rather than a manual. Instead of a clutch, an automatic car has a footrest. It is difficult for automatic cars to stall as they don’t have a clutch. Also, you won’t accidentally put the car into the wrong gear or grind the gears.
A Manual’s gear stick is different than an Automatic. A manual has one reverse gear and five, possibly 6, forward gears. The main operations of the automatic gear stick include four major operations. Although there may be variations, they are (P) park, (D) drive, (N) neutral, and (R) reverse. The operation are very simple, with perhaps the exception of neutral that is used when your vehicle is stopped at traffic lights or in heavy congestion.
Another difference is that a manual car will not move on the flat unless you use the accelerator. An automatic, however, can be set into reverse or drive and the car will move by itself. Although it won’t move very fast until your press the accelerator, it will still be moving. This is something to keep in mind if you want to switch from a manual to an automatic car.

Which Is Most Popular Automatic Or Manual Cars?
Manual cars are the most popular in the UK, but the number of automatics being manufactured is increasing. Automatics are generally more expensive to purchase as well as to run and maintain. On average they use more fuel than manual cars, and they are more expensive to repair and insure.

What Are The Benefits Of Automatic Driving Lessons

If you are having difficulty with clutch control or gear changes, learning to drive an automatic will be a lot easier. When you learn to drive in an urban environment with lots of traffic, there is less to worry about. Because of the nature of urban driving, you will have to change gears often. Even if you’re an experienced driver, this can be quite frustrating.
Taking your driving test in an automatic car is easier than driving in a manual car as you do not have the risk of stalling the car and any struggles you have with clutch control. Because there are no gears so you do not need a clutch in an automatic car, it is much easier to perform manoeuvres like a turn in traffic or a hill start.

Are There Any Downsides To Driving An Automatic Car?
As we have already mentioned, automatic cars are generally more expensive to buy, run and maintain. Automatic driving lessons can often be more expensive that manual driving lessons because of this.
One downside to learning how to drive in an automatic car is that it does not allow you to drive a manual car. Your licence will allow both if you pass your manual driving test.
This means that if you are taking your driving test in an automatic car, it may limit your options when renting or buying a car in the future. Also, if later you decide you would prefer to drive manual cars, then you’ll need to take another driving test.
Pass rates for automatic cars are usually lower than those in manual cars. However, don’t let this deter you as every year thousands of learners pass their driving tests in automatic cars.
