What Is The Difference Between Manual Cars And Automatic Cars?
It can be difficult to learn how to drive a manual vehicle, especially if you live in a busy area where daily driving involves lots of changing gears and clutch control. You may have taken driving lessons in manual cars before but found it too difficult to handle the gears. Another reason drivers may choose an automatic is because they have difficulty changing the gears due to a disability. If this describes you, you are not alone. Many people find learning to drive and passing their test in an automatic much easier and more enjoyable.
Automatic transmission cars automatically change gears for you. If your car has a manual transmission, you will have to change the gears by yourself.
A manual car will have 3 pedals the brake, accelerator and clutch. They also come with a gear stick, used in conjunction with the clutch to change gears. The clutch is operated using your left foot while the other two are controlled with your right foot. Simply press the clutch down to change gear. When the clutch is down, you can then move the gearstick to select the required gear. You will find a clutch pedal on most manual cars, but some cars, replace the pedal with a trigger/button on the gear stick.
An automatic car does without a clutch because the gears are changed automatically. As the vehicle accelerates, it will automatically change the gears higher. When the car slows down or stops, the gears will automatically switch to the lower gear. In an automatic car you don’t need to know how to coordinate the clutch, gear lever and accelerator. This makes learning to drive an automatic car a lot easier than learning how to drive a manual. Instead of a clutch pedal, there’s usually a footrest. Automatic cars are very difficult to stall because they don’t have a clutch. You will also not accidentally place the car in an incorrect gear, or grind the gears.
Manuals have a different gear stick than Automatics. A manual allows you to choose from 5 forward gears, possibly 6, and one reverse gear. An Automatic’s gear stick has 4 main operations. While there are many variations, these four operations, (P) park (D) drive (N) neutral (R) reverse. are the most usual ones. These operations are easy to understand, except for neutral, which is used when you’re stopped at traffic lights, or in heavy traffic.
Another difference is that a manual car will not move on the flat unless you use the accelerator. An automatic, however, can be set into reverse or drive and the car will move by itself. It will move, but it won’t go very fast unless you push the accelerator. If you’re used to driving manual cars and want to switch to an automatic, this is something you need to remember.

Which Is Most Popular Automatic Or Manual Cars?
Manual cars are the most popular in the UK, but the number of automatics being manufactured is increasing. Automatics can be more expensive to buy, run and maintain. On average they use more fuel than manual cars, and they are more expensive to repair and insure.

What Are The Advantages Of Taking Driving Lessons In An Automatic Car?
The process of learning how to drive an automatic car isn’t always easier, it all depends upon what difficulties you are experiencing. You won’t notice a difference if you struggling with a common problem such as observation.
Driving in an automatic is a good option if your problems with clutch control or gear changing. When you learn to drive in an urban environment with lots of traffic, there is less to worry about. It is a stop-start driving style that means you’ll be changing gears constantly. This can be an issue for experienced drivers as well as those who are learning to drive a manual vehicle.
You can take your driving test in an automatic car, eliminating the possibility of the car stalling and any clutch control problems. In an automatic car you are able to handle difficult manoeuvres such as a turn in the road or a hill-start easier, which can be daunting for students who drive a manual car, as there are no gears or clutch control to worry about.
You might have difficulty managing the gears of a manual car. If this is the case, it might be easier to learn to drive in an automatic car.
Are There Any Downsides To Driving An Automatic Car?
As you can see, automatic cars are more expensive to own, maintain and run. Because of this, automatic driving lessons tend to be more expensive than manual lessons.
A downside to learning to drive an automatic car is that your license does not qualify you to drive a manual car. If you pass your driving test in a manual car, your license will permit you to drive both.
It is possible that your future choices in buying or renting a vehicle or van may be limited by taking your driving test in an automatic car. Also, if later you decide you would prefer to drive manual cars, then you’ll need to take another driving test.
In general, automatic cars have lower pass rates than manual cars. Don’t let it discourage you! Every year, thousands of learners pass driving tests in automatic car.

Automatic Driving Lessons Frequently Asked Questions
Is automatic a full licence?
You are only allowed to drive automatic cars, and not manuals. However, if you hold a manual licence, then you can also drive automatics. Therefore, the latter is a full licence.
Are automatic cars more expensive to insure?
Because automatic cars are usually more expensive to buy, the car insurance premiums tend to be higher. This is to cover the cost of any damage, or the cost of a replacement vehicle. For example, an automatic gearbox is more complex than a manual one and so would usually cost more to replace.
Do I need to use handbrake on automatic car?
Always apply the parking brake when you are stationary in an automatic car. In P or N, the car will not drive, but the parking brake will keep it still. However, if in any other gear, the car will drive off under power if you touch the accelerator pedal, purposefully or by accident unless you have the brakes on.
Can you shift from drive to neutral without breaking?
Though it will not harm your transmission to shift into Neutral while your vehicle is in motion, the additional wear on your brakes by leaving the transmission in Drive will be negligible over the life of the brake pads. I
