What Is The Difference Between Manual And Automatic Cars?
It can be difficult to learn how to drive a manual vehicle, especially if you live in a busy area where daily driving involves lots of changing gears and clutch control. You may have taken driving lessons in manual cars before but found it too difficult to handle the gears. A driver may also choose an automatic car because they are unable to change gears as easily due to a disability. If this is you then don’t worry as you are not the only one. Many people find it easier to learn how to drive and pass their driving test in an automatic .
A car equipped with an automatic transmission changes the gears automatically for you. If you drive a car with a manual transmission, then you will need to change the gears as you speed up and slow down.
Manual cars usually have three pedals, the clutch, brake, and accelerator. You also have a gear stick which is used to change gears. The clutch is operated using your left foot while the other two are controlled with your right foot. To change gear, you push the clutch down. When the clutch is down, you can move the stick to select the proper gear for your speed. You will find a clutch pedal on most manual cars, but some cars, replace the pedal with a trigger/button on the gear stick.
Because an automatics car’s gears are changed automatically, it doesn’t have a clutch. The car will automatically change gears as the speed increases and when the car slows down, it will automatically shift to a lower gear. In an automatic car you don’t need to know how to coordinate the clutch, gear lever and accelerator. This makes it easier to learn how to drive an automatic car rather than a manual. Instead of a clutch, an automatic car has a footrest. Automatic cars do not have a clutch so they are very difficult to stall. It is also impossible to put an automatic car in the wrong gear or grind the gears.
A Manual’s gear stick is different than an Automatic. Manual cars have five, possibly 6, forward gears and one reverse gear. An Automatic’s gear stick has 4 main operations. While there are many variations, these four operations, (P) park (D) drive (N) neutral (R) reverse. are the most usual ones. These operations are easy to understand, except for neutral, which is used when you’re stopped at traffic lights, or in heavy traffic.
A second difference is that a manual car cannot move on the flat unless you use the accelerator. However, an automatic can be put into drive or reverse and it will glide along by itself. While it will move it won’t be very fast until you press the accelerator. This is something to keep in mind if you want to switch from a manual to an automatic car.

Which Car Manual Or Automatic Is The Most Popular?
The UK has a higher proportion of manual cars, but there is an increasing number of automatics being built each year. Automatics are generally more expensive to purchase as well as to run and maintain. On average they use more fuel than manual cars, and they are more expensive to repair and insure.

What Are The Benefits Of Automatic Driving Lessons
It is not necessarily easier to learn how to drive an automatic car, it all depends on what you are dealing with. You won’t notice a difference if you struggling with a common problem such as observation.
Driving in an automatic is a good option if your problems with clutch control or gear changing. When you learn to drive in an urban environment with lots of traffic, there is less to worry about. Because of the nature of urban driving, you will have to change gears often. Even if you’re an experienced driver, this can be quite frustrating.
You can take your driving test in an automatic car, eliminating the possibility of the car stalling and any clutch control problems. In an automatic car you are able to handle difficult manoeuvres such as a turn in the road or a hill-start easier, which can be daunting for students who drive a manual car, as there are no gears or clutch control to worry about.
If you have difficulties with the gears in a manual car, an automatic car may be a better choice. You might find it easier to learn how to drive and pass your driving test.
Are There Downsides to Driving an Automatic Car?
As we have already mentioned, automatic cars are generally more expensive to buy, run and maintain. Because of this, automatic driving lessons tend to be more expensive than manual lessons.
A downside to learning to drive an automatic car is that your license does not qualify you to drive a manual car. If you pass your driving test in a manual car, your license will permit you to drive both.
You may find that passing your test in an automatic car could limit your options for buying or renting a car in the future. You will have to take your driving test again if you decide to drive a manual car.
Automatic cars have a lower pass rate than manual cars. However, don’t let this deter you as every year thousands of learners pass their driving tests in automatic cars.

Automatic Driving Lessons FAQs
Is automatic a full licence?
You are only allowed to drive automatic cars, and not manuals. However, if you hold a manual licence, then you can also drive automatics. Therefore, the latter is a full licence.
Are automatic cars more expensive to insure?
Because automatic cars are usually more expensive to buy, the car insurance premiums tend to be higher. This is to cover the cost of any damage, or the cost of a replacement vehicle. For example, an automatic gearbox is more complex than a manual one and so would usually cost more to replace.
Do I need to use handbrake on automatic car?
Always apply the parking brake when you are stationary in an automatic car. In P or N, the car will not drive, but the parking brake will keep it still. However, if in any other gear, the car will drive off under power if you touch the accelerator pedal, purposefully or by accident unless you have the brakes on.
Can you shift from drive to neutral without breaking?
Though it will not harm your transmission to shift into Neutral while your vehicle is in motion, the additional wear on your brakes by leaving the transmission in Drive will be negligible over the life of the brake pads. I
