Manual and automatic refer to the type transmission, or gears that your car has. In a manual vehicle, you are required to change the gears yourself at the correct time. Automatic cars change the gears when needed for you.

What Is The Difference Between Automatic Cars And Manual Cars?

Driving a manual car isn’t for everyone, especially if you live in a busy area where shifting gears and controlling the clutch are a daily part of your driving. Perhaps you have previously taken driving lessons in a manual car and found the handling of the gears difficult. A disability that prevents drivers from changing gears easily is another reason why they may choose to learn to drive in an automatic. If this is you then don’t worry as you are not the only one. Many people find it easier to learn how to drive and pass their driving test in an automatic .

If you are driving an automatic transmission car, it will automatically change the gears for you. You must change the gears yourself if your car is manual transmission.

There are three pedals in manual cars, the clutch, brake, and the accelerator. You also have a gear stick which when used with the clutch allows you to change the gears. The clutch is operated with the left foot and the other two pedals with your right foot. To change gear, you push the clutch down. When the clutch is down, you can then move the gearstick to select the required gear. Most manual cars have a clutch pedal, but some cars have a trigger or button on the gearstick.

Because an automatics car’s gears are changed automatically, it doesn’t have a clutch. The car will automatically change gears as the speed increases and when the car slows down, it will automatically shift to a lower gear. In an automatic car you don’t need to know how to coordinate the clutch, gear lever and accelerator. This makes it easier to learn how to drive an automatic car rather than a manual. Instead of a clutch, an automatic car has a footrest. Automatic cars do not have a clutch so they are very difficult to stall. Also, you can not put the car in the wrong gear or grind the gears.

Manuals have a different type of gear stick to an Automatic. A manual has one reverse gear and five, possibly 6, forward gears. The four main operations of an Automatic’s gear stick are (P), park, (D) drive, (N)  neutral, and (R) reverse. There are many variations but these are the main four operations. The operation are very simple, with perhaps the exception of neutral that is used when your vehicle is stopped at traffic lights or in heavy congestion.

A second difference is that a manual car cannot move on the flat unless you use the accelerator. However, an automatic can be put into drive or reverse and it will glide along by itself. While it will move it won’t be very fast until you press the accelerator. If you’re used to driving manual cars and want to switch to an automatic, this is something you need to remember.

What Are The Advantages Of Taking Driving Lessons In An Automatic Car?

Although learning to drive in an automatic car can be easier than driving a manual car, it all depends on your specific difficulties. It won’t make much of a difference to you if you have a common issue like observation.

You might find it easier to learn how to drive in an automatic if you have trouble with clutch control and gear changes. Driving in urban areas with lots congestion it is easier. Because of the nature of urban driving, you will have to change gears often. This can be an issue for experienced drivers as well as those who are learning to drive a manual vehicle.

Taking your driving test in an automatic car is easier than driving in a manual car as you do not have the risk of stalling the car and any struggles you have with clutch control. In an automatic car you are able to handle difficult manoeuvres such as a turn in the road or a hill-start easier, which can be daunting for students who drive a manual car, as there are no gears or clutch control to worry about.

If you have difficulties with the gears in a manual car, an automatic car may be a better choice. You might find it easier to learn how to drive and pass your driving test.

Are There Downsides to Driving an Automatic Car?

As stated above, automatic cars tend be more expensive than manual cars to purchase, run and maintain. Automatic driving lessons can often be more expensive that manual driving lessons because of this.

Another downside of learning to drive an automatic vehicle is that when you pass your driving test in an automatic, it doesn’t mean you can also drive a manual car. If you pass your driving test in a manual car, your license will permit you to drive both.

It is possible that your future choices in buying or renting a vehicle or van may be limited by taking your driving test in an automatic car. In the event that you decide later to drive a manually-operated car, you will need another test.

Pass rates for automatic cars are usually lower than those in manual cars. However, don’t let this deter you as every year thousands of learners pass their driving tests in automatic cars.
