Both manual and automatic are the types of transmissions or gears found in a car. You must change the gears yourself in a manual car. As the name suggests an automatic car automatically changes the gears at the appropriate time.

What Is The Difference Between Automatic Cars And Manual Cars?

If you live in a busy city where shifting gears and clutch control is an essential part of daily driving, learning to drive a manual car may not be for you. You may have taken driving lessons in manual cars before but found it too difficult to handle the gears. Another reason drivers may choose an automatic is because they have difficulty changing the gears due to a disability. If this is you, you’re not alone. Many people find learning to drive and passing the driving test in an automatic much easier.

Automatic transmission cars automatically change gears for you. If you drive a car with a manual transmission, then you will need to change the gears as you speed up and slow down.

There are three pedals in manual cars, the clutch, brake, and the accelerator. They also come with a gear stick, used in conjunction with the clutch to change gears. The clutch is operated with the left foot and the other two pedals with your right foot. Simply press the clutch down to change gear. The clutch must be down in order to move the gearstick and select the right gear for you. The majority of manual cars will have a clutch pedal, however, some cars can replace the pedal with a trigger or a button on the gearstick.

An automatic car doesn’t need a clutch as the gears are automatically changed. The car will automatically change gears as the speed increases and when the car slows down, it will automatically shift to a lower gear. In an automatic car you don’t need to know how to coordinate the clutch, gear lever and accelerator. This makes learning to drive an automatic car a lot easier than learning how to drive a manual. Instead of a clutch, an automatic car has a footrest. Automatic cars do not have a clutch so they are very difficult to stall. You will also not accidentally place the car in an incorrect gear, or grind the gears.

Manuals have a different gear stick than Automatics. A manual has one reverse gear and five, possibly 6, forward gears. The four main operations of an Automatic’s gear stick are (P), park, (D) drive, (N)  neutral, and (R) reverse. There are many variations but these are the main four operations. These operations are easy to understand, except for neutral, which is used when you’re stopped at traffic lights, or in heavy traffic.

Another difference is the fact that you must use the accelerator to get a manual vehicle to move on the flat. But if you put an automatic into drive or reverse, the car will creep along all by itself. The car will move even though it is not going very fast, until you use the accelerator. This is important to remember if you’re used to driving a manual car and plan to switch to an automatic

Manual cars are the most popular in the UK, but the number of automatics being manufactured is increasing. Automatics can be more expensive to buy, run and maintain. On average they use more fuel than manual cars, and they are more expensive to repair and insure.

What Are The Advantages Of Taking Driving Lessons In An Automatic Car?

Although learning to drive in an automatic car can be easier than driving a manual car, it all depends on your specific difficulties. You won’t notice a difference if you struggling with a common problem such as observation.

Driving in an automatic is a good option if your problems with clutch control or gear changing. Driving in urban areas with lots congestion it is easier. You will need to constantly change your gear because of the stop-start nature involved in driving in densely populated areas. Even if you’re an experienced driver, this can be quite frustrating.

You can take your driving test in an automatic car, eliminating the possibility of the car stalling and any clutch control problems.

If you have difficulties with the gears in a manual car, an automatic car may be a better choice. You might find it easier to learn how to drive and pass your driving test.

Is There A Downside To Driving An Automatic Car?

As we have already mentioned, automatic cars are generally more expensive to buy, run and maintain. Because of this, automatic driving lessons tend to be more expensive than manual lessons.

A downside to learning to drive an automatic car is that your license does not qualify you to drive a manual car. Your licence will allow both if you pass your manual driving test.

It is possible that your future choices in buying or renting a vehicle or van may be limited by taking your driving test in an automatic car. In the event that you decide later to drive a manually-operated car, you will need another test.

Automatic cars have a lower pass rate than manual cars. However, don’t let this deter you as every year thousands of learners pass their driving tests in automatic cars.

Automatic Driving Lessons FAQs

What gear do you use when going uphill in an automatic?

Shift to Low Gear This is because you need to have enough pulling or engine power to safely climb an inclined road. What you need to do is shift to a low gear, which is either the D1, D2, or D3 that's found on your car's gear lever. Of note, some automatic cars have it labeled as L, 2, and 3.

What does S mean in automatic cars?

The S mode stands for sport. It provides you a more dynamic driving experience as the S mode varies the sensitivity of your car's throttle response. As a result, you would feel that your car's RPM will climb faster than usual as more fuel is injected into the cylinders as compared to using the D or Drive mode.

Should I put my car in neutral when stopping at a red light automatic?

Leave your car in gear at a red light It's much better to put your car in neutral and apply the handbrake to keep it stationary. When you put your car in neutral, the clutch is spared unnecessary wear and tear.

How do you stop an automatic car if the brakes fail?
