Automatic and manual refers to the type of transmission (or gears) that is in the car. In a manual vehicle, you are required to change the gears yourself at the correct time. As the name suggests an automatic car will change the gears automatically when needed.

What Is The Difference Between Automatic Cars And Manual Cars?

Driving a manual car isn’t for everyone, especially if you live in a busy area where shifting gears and controlling the clutch are a daily part of your driving. You may have taken driving lessons in manual cars before but found it too difficult to handle the gears. Another reason drivers may choose an automatic is because they have difficulty changing the gears due to a disability. If this is you, you’re not alone. Many people find learning to drive and passing the driving test in an automatic much easier.

If you are driving an automatic transmission car, it will automatically change the gears for you. You will need to change the gears yourself if you drive a manual transmission car.

Manual cars usually have three pedals, the clutch, brake, and accelerator. You also have a gear stick which is used to change gears. The clutch is operated using your left foot while the other two are controlled with your right foot. To change gear, you push the clutch down. When the clutch is down, you can move the stick to select the proper gear for your speed. The majority of manual cars will have a clutch pedal, however, some cars can replace the pedal with a trigger or a button on the gearstick.

Because an automatics car’s gears are changed automatically, it doesn’t have a clutch. As the vehicle accelerates, it will automatically change the gears higher. When the car slows down or stops, the gears will automatically switch to the lower gear. The co-ordination between the clutch, accelerator and gear lever is not required when driving an automatic car. Because of this an automatic car is much more easy to learn than a manual car. A footrest is usually used in place of the clutch. Automatic cars are very difficult to stall because they don’t have a clutch. Also, you won’t accidentally put the car into the wrong gear or grind the gears.

Manuals have a different gear stick than Automatics. A manual has one reverse gear and five, possibly 6, forward gears. The four main operations of an Automatic’s gear stick are (P), park, (D) drive, (N)  neutral, and (R) reverse. There are many variations but these are the main four operations. These operations are fairly self-explanatory with the possible exception of neutral which can be used when you are stopped at traffic lights or in heavy traffic.

Another difference is that a manual car will not move on the flat unless you use the accelerator. An automatic, however, can be set into reverse or drive and the car will move by itself. Although it won’t move very fast until your press the accelerator, it will still be moving. This is important to remember if you’re used to driving a manual car and plan to switch to an automatic

The UK has a higher proportion of manual cars, but there is an increasing number of automatics being built each year. Automatic cars tend to be more expensive to purchase, run and maintain. On average they use more fuel than manual cars, and they are more expensive to repair and insure.

What Are The Benefits Of Automatic Driving Lessons

Driving an automatic car is not necessarily any easier, it depends on the issues you are having. You won’t notice a difference if you struggling with a common problem such as observation.

It is possible to learn to drive an automatic car if gear changes or clutch control are difficult for you. Driving in urban areas with lots congestion it is easier. You will need to constantly change your gear because of the stop-start nature involved in driving in densely populated areas. This can be an issue for experienced drivers as well as those who are learning to drive a manual vehicle.

Taking your driving test in an automatic car is easier than driving in a manual car as you do not have the risk of stalling the car and any struggles you have with clutch control. A learner will have a lot less difficulty with driving manoeuvres, such as turning in the road or starting from a hill due to no gears or clutch control required.

If you have difficulties with the gears in a manual car, an automatic car may be a better choice. You might find it easier to learn how to drive and pass your driving test.

Are There Any Downsides To Driving An Automatic Car?

As you can see, automatic cars are more expensive to own, maintain and run. This is why automatic driving lessons are more expensive than manual driving lessons.

One downside to learning how to drive in an automatic car is that it does not allow you to drive a manual car. You can drive both manual and automatic cars if your test is passed in a manual car.

You may find that passing your test in an automatic car could limit your options for buying or renting a car in the future. In the event that you decide later to drive a manually-operated car, you will need another test.

Automatic cars have a lower pass rate than manual cars. Don’t let it discourage you! Every year, thousands of learners pass driving tests in automatic car.
